Job Description
We are looking for a motivated and experienced Computational Biologist
to join the research group of Dr Nick Goldman. The successful
applicant will investigate the evolution of non-protein-coding
regulatory sequence in vertebrate genomics. This will involve the
integration of functional genomic data (ChIP-Seq) with whole genome
multiple sequence alignments and genomic annotation, the application
of advanced phylogenetic methods and subsequent interpretation of
results. This post represents a key position within a multi-institute
and multi-disciplinary collaborative research project.
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), part of the European
Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), provides cutting-edge research,
service and training in the field of Bioinformatics. The EBI is
located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, near
Cambridge, UK, next to Europe’s largest genome sequencing centre.
The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant biologicial
or computational field. Previous post-doctoral experience in sequence
motif searching and an understanding of transcriptional regulation in
eukaryotes is required. S/he will have proven ability to formulate
scientific hypotheses and test them using computational and
statistical analysis. Given the predefined nature of the project and
the short time-frame for delivering results, the successful applicant
must be experienced in whole-genome scale comparative genomic
analysis, including the application of advanced phylogenetic models to
non-coding sequence data.
It is essential that the Research Associate will have experience in
the Perl programming language and be familiar with management and use
of SQL databases and be competent in the use of statistical analysis
software e.g. R. Familiarity with the Ensembl API is also required.
The ideal candidate will have excellent written and oral communication
and interpersonal skills and have the ability to interact productively
in a multi-institute collaborative environment.
An initial contract of 10 months will be offered to the successful
candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time
of review.
