PhD student position:
An interdisciplinary PhD student position is available in the groups of Prof. Handschin and Prof. van Nimwegen at the Biozentrum, University of Basel. Our groups are interested in studying transcriptional networks, in particular those that control skeletal muscle plasticity in health and disease. Within that framework, the successful applicant will create novel computational approaches to integrate data from next generation ultra high-throughput sequencing, transcriptome analysis and other systems biology approaches. The position, which is funded by a SystemsX.ch interdisciplinary PhD (IPhD) fellowship, thus combines bioinformatical approaches with biological techniques. Accordingly, the successful candidate will be a member of both research groups, that of Prof. Handschin (molecular biology) and that of Prof. van Nimwegen (bioinformatics).
Applicants should be highly motivated, have a solid background in bioinformatics, a strong interest in biological problems and a MSc, diploma or equivalent degree. Experience in the area of transcriptional regulation or with next generation sequencing methods is a plus. Good knowledge of English is expected, German is helpful but not necessary. Salary according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation. The position is initially funded for 3 years with the possibility for a 1-year extension. SystemsX.ch IPhD fellowships also include separate funds for the participation at scientific meetings. Entrance by arrangement.
To apply, please send your CV, summary of research interests and 2-3 letters of recommendation to Prof. Handschin. For further information, see www.biozentrum.unibas.ch, www.systemsx.ch and/or directly contact Christoph Handschin or Erik van Nimwegen.
