Laboratory Manager Position Vacancy @ EMBL
EMBL is offering a position as Laboratory Manager in the Genome Biology Unit in its main laboratory in Heidelberg. The position is available in the laboratory of the Joint Head of Unit, Dr. Lars Steinmetz, whose research focuses on dissecting the molecular basis of complex traits, combining genetics, functional genomics, systems biology and computational biology.
The following gives a brief overview of the tasks of the Laboratory Manager.
Scientific Research:
- Independently drive and lead scientific projects
- Project management of external collaborations until publication
- Presentation of data at internal meetings
- Literature research
- Manuscript preparation for publication
Training and supervision:
- Training of new group members and visitors in technologies and protocols used in the laboratory, including yeast and human cell culture, genetic engineering, tiling array hybridization, next generation sequencing, light microscopy, computerized data analysis, reagent and strain databases, software training etc.
- Supervision of research technicians in lab stock organization and in testing and developing new tools, reagents and experimental protocols which are of general interest for the lab and the unit
Lab management:
- General management of the laboratory, such as administration of reagent databases, instrument maintenance and scheduling, etc.
- General management of the unit, including coordination of all technicians of the unit, interfacing with the unit administrator, common equipment ordering, common space organization, interfacing with EMBL’s service units, planning for remodeling and construction projects in collaboration with EMBL’s estate management
We are looking for candidates who have a confirmed expertise (with an appropriate university degree) and at least 5 years working experience in a related field. The Laboratory Manager should have a broad knowledge of the biological mechanisms underlying gene expression and phenotypic diversity. (S)he must have demonstrated experience in data analysis for oral presentation and publication, as well as manuscript editing and writing. Moreover the ideal candidate should have independence in using and teaching methods and techniques used for genetic engineering, yeast molecular biology, microarray hybridization, next generation sequencing, and data analysis. Demonstrated proficiency in the coordination and organization of tasks is essential. The applicant should work well in a group as well as be able to develop independent contributions and to work under pressure. An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
